A little history of our village Avana ??? Avana a sacred passage, the departure and arrival point for ancient Polynesian navigators. Tradition tells of the seven traditional vaka (double-hull canoes) that left Avana Passage in 1250 CE and sailed 1,700 miles to Aotearoa (New Zealand) each hundred-meter-long vaka was able to carry over fifty men and woman as well as supplies for their long voyage. It is believed that as many as a hundred voyages using traditional navigation methods departed from this beautiful site. ???The Passage Villas??? sits on the shore approximately 600 meters from this memorial site for ocean voyaging people that once inhabited the islands of Polynesia. The people of this village are the descendants of the Polynesian navigators that remained behind to care for the land and this iconic site. Each year, groups from various Aotearoa tribe pilgrimage to the passage to pay homage to their ancestors for their remarkable feat. I am of Cook Island descent and grew up in this village, a childhood I feel blessed to have had, soft warm sandy beaches, turquoise lagoons an abundance of tropical fruit to feed on and a village of friendly people to raise me. It was a given that I would return after years abroad to enjoy the lifestyle. My husband is of Niuean/Norwegian descent, we have both spent a good part of our lives in the hospitality and customer service industry, so our new challenge for 2020 was to put our expertise together and refurbish 8 villas that are nestled amongst the flora and fora in a very secluded location with the ocean at your door step. Our villas are beautifully appointed with the ocean colours in the ocean view rooms and garden colours in the garden rooms, our villas are comfortable suitable for couples however we do have a family unit with a separate Queen size bed and a day bed in the lounge. The rooms come with a microwave, tea and coffee facilities and small fridge and kitchenette, our village hostess a magnificent variety of restaurants, cafes and markets, we are happy to provide you with a free shuttle service upon request to the Muri Markets a place you could dine every night with island size portions of an assortment of cuisines. Our beach is not suitable for swimming however exploring the reef on a low tide or collecting shells on our shore is fun, we do have a pool for our guests and the best snorkelling locations are nearby, so please bring your reef shoes and lagoon exploring gear. We get a lovely sea breeze off the ocean but our villas also have air-conditioning and ceiling fans and as we are close to the depth of the ocean we are blessed with a visit from migrating whales between July and October our location is superb as you can view them from the comfort of your villa.
